Welcome The New Tigers

By on February 6th, 2013 in Featured Article, Football 35 Comments »

Wow, just wow! What an exciting morning it was here at recruiting central. The fact that Auburn is sitting in the top 15 in the nation’s recruiting polls is evidence of some incredibly hard work by Gus Malzahn and his staff.

I would like to thank everyone for staying tuned in during the morning, and allowing me to take up so much of your time. I hope you enjoyed as much as I did.

Coach Malzahn will hold a press conference at 3:00 pm CT and we will be here with comments.

Since we covered most of the recruits in an earlier post, I wanted to add some profiles of these new Tigers for your viewing pleasure.

Something that jumped out at me right away. Earnest Robinson, a WR has a 40 time listed at 4.8 and Carl Lawson a DE at 4.7. Either Robinson is slow for a WR or Lawson is fast for a DE. Which is it?

    • KoolBell KoolBell says:

That top end speed was the limiting factor that kept Earnest Robinson from getting a fifth star. Incredible playmaker. I would guess that he is actually a little faster than that.

      • MyAuburn MyAuburn says:

He has the size if he can add a few pounds to be a TE. His top end speed will not be as much of a downside there.

  2. KoolBell KoolBell says:

That is it for Auburn today. Folston chose ND and Cunningham chose Vandy. Only possible Tiger left is Toby Johnson, and I place our chances at less than 25% on him.
Still a great class after all.

    • MyAuburn MyAuburn says:

Do we have any spots left Kool?

      • KoolBell KoolBell says:

I don’t know for sure. One site says we could have signed 26 the other says we had 24 to fill. The best thing about this class, other than its obvious allure, is that now, after four long years, we finally have a full roster.

  3. KoolBell KoolBell says:

It’s a great day, we really filled our needs – Gus Malzahn

  4. KoolBell KoolBell says:

After thanking the AD for all the tools neccessary to get thing done, he is going to give an assessment of each recruit. Then take questions.

  5. KoolBell KoolBell says:

Took time to thank all the recruits that hung with AU through it all.

  6. KoolBell KoolBell says:

Said Carl Lawson was a key to this class. Stability he’s shown was key. Then said pretty much the same about Jeremy Johnson

  7. KoolBell KoolBell says:

    Described Jason Smith as “electric”

  8. KoolBell KoolBell says:

Win with the defensive line and we got three of the best in the country. Was a great feeling when Adams put on that hat.

  9. KoolBell KoolBell says:

“This going to be my 8th year to coach college. Don’t know if I’ve seen a bigger, more athletic guy than him.” – Malzahn talking about Montravius Adams

  10. KoolBell KoolBell says:

Talented defensive linemen like these three we got, can really rush the passer..

  11. KoolBell KoolBell says:

from a head coaching stand point, the fact that we didn’t have a full year to recruit, I am very pleased with our staff.

  12. KoolBell KoolBell says:

The majority of our energy has been put into this class, we have spent some time on 2014, and 2015 classes

  13. KoolBell KoolBell says:

He was asked about the incident this past weekend, and he did his best Chizik impersonation ever saying “you know, all I’m gonna talk about is this class”

  14. KoolBell KoolBell says:

That’s it for me folks! Your 2013 NSD coverage is over, and your Auburn Tigers have finished much better than expected.

    WAR EAGLE!

    Great work Kool

  18. Col.Angus Col.Angus says:

Today’s big winner, Elijah Daniel. He looks to be a great player anyway, but paired up with Lawson and Adams, he should thrive while those two get double teamed. The secondary just got a whole lot better because of those guys too. Should really be fun to watch those guys the next three years

  19. sparkey sparkey says:

This was a solid class overall and outstanding considering the short time the coaches had to get this class together. The 2014 will truly let us know how good this staff is going to be at recruiting! My guess, they’re going to be excellent except for J.B. Grimes and Ellis Johnson. The rest of the staff is outstanding and Scott Fountain is somebody you’ll hear a lot about on the recruiting trail very soon. I have no doubt our coaches are going to bring in some major athletes. Carl Lawson is going to become an Auburn legend. I think Adams is over rated honestly, but that’s just me. Daniel will be very good for us as well and Nick Marshall an early signee will be one to watch! This will be a very good defensive line for the next three years!

On the down side of things, Tim Jackson was every where during the recruiting day. I’m furious over that. What the hell is he doing here still? We were told he was taken out of the football program completely. Really? Then why on national signing day was he there with the coaches? Chizik wanted him there? I suppose Gus wants him there now? RIIIIIGHT…thanks JJ and the powers that be. You want to have control more than you want to win. That’s down right pathetic.

  20. mikeautiger says:

Great day and class with the little time to recruit. A lot of focus on defense, but can you imagine with all the QBs we have that will and will not play QB we could line up with a 4 or 5 QB set and run or throw it and nobody would know how to define it. Especially with all the tricker action Gus likes to do, I can hardly wait.

Hey Everyone! Although I have been following TET for quite sometime, this is my very first post. I would like to take this opportunity to thank KoolBell for the outstanding job he did today. I graduated from AU (Architecture) wayyyyyyyyy back in 1976 and I can’t think of a time where I’ve been more excited about Auburn football (well, except maybe for that game a couple of years ago out in Phoenix). I was a big proponent for hiring Gus, and since things rarely go my way in regards to football on the Plains, I’m still pinching myself to make sure he is indeed at Auburn. With that being said, I will sign off with a WAR DAMN EAGLE!

    • KoolBell KoolBell says:

Thanks for the compliments. I don’t deserve such praise, but thank you anyway.
Welcome to TET, and thank you for reading all this time. Your comments will always be welcome here, so please feel free to chime in anytime you want to.

Thanks and a tip of our collective hats (BR Area Auburn “Coaches” Club) for the great coverage. The food at Acme Oyster Bar was great and we enjoyed the Auburn gathering. I always check TET every AM first thing to find out what’s going on at Auburn and especially with football. I’ll keep doing that and will never forget:
IT’S GREAT TO BE AN AUBURN TIGER !!!

    WAR EAGLE !!!

    GO BIG BLUE !!!

  24. DBAU81 says:

After the last two years, we all know that excellent recruiting is not necessarily a guarantee of success on the field. On the other hand, bad recruiting usually leads to bad football teams. With those observations out of the way, I defy anyone to show me a coaching staff that, given the hand they were dealt, did a better job than Auburn’s in recruiting this year. Well done, gentlemen. Now it’s time to start coaching them up.

    War Damn Eagle.

  25. tigerpaw75 says:

I google searched Earnest Robinson 40 time and on other pay recruiting sites it indicates he has run 4.5 – 4.6 40 times…not sure at what even the Rivals time (4.8) came from. ER has great raw talent but really needs to coached up in his route running and technique…if he develops, he could be an All-SEC type player in 2-3 years.
